The Real Cost of Hiring Before You Are Ready

The commitment nobody prices

Salary is the visible number. The real figure includes onboarding time, tooling, management attention, and the cash runway you give up.

Three tests before you post the role

  1. The runway test. Model the hire against your worst realistic quarter, not your best.
  2. The capacity test. Is the constraint genuinely people, or is it an undocumented process?
  3. The revenue test. Can you name the specific work this person unlocks in their first ninety days?

When the answer is yes

Hire deliberately and early enough to train properly. The expensive mistake is not hiring — it is hiring in a panic, into a role nobody defined.
